We have received the below e-mail form the Village of KB, notifying us of the beginning of a beach re-nourishment project. Please note that once the Village project starts, TKB beach services and furniture will be limited to weekends only. We encourage residents to exercise caution when walking on the beach, as there will be trucks running along the length of the beach to deliver sand.

Beach Re-Nourishment Project to Begin March 2

The 2021 Beach Re-nourishment project is set to begin on Tuesday, March 2, 2021.

Ferreira Construction will begin with laying down a temporary road on the north and south beach access points -at either end of Oceana- as well as a temporary path along the beach, which will be used by smaller trucks to move sand north and south.

Trucks are expected to begin delivering sand on Friday, March 5 to the beach staging areas.

Residents and visitors are reminded to use caution if visiting the beach. Work on the beach will take place Monday – Friday from sunup to sundown. The beaches will be accessible on weekends, but residents and visitors are asked to be cautious as beach conditions may vary.

As a result of Hurricane Irma in 2017 and natural erosion, Key Biscayne’s beaches need repair. The Village has secured Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), the Florida Department of Environmental Protection, and the Florida Division of Emergency Management grants that will fund 23 thousand cubic yards of sand for the project. During the March 9 Council Meeting, the Council will vote on the possibly adding an additional 8 thousand cubic yards of sand, to be funded by the Village should funds be available, to maximize shoreline protection.

By widening the beach and restoring the dunes, the Village’s goal is to enhance shoreline protection and minimize damages that may arise from future storms. Working with Ferreira Construction, the Village will add 23 thousand cubic yards to the beach and rebuild the dunes, which includes replanting native plants and removing exotic plants.

Each day, about 100 trucks of sand will be brought in using the Public Beach Access Point (Sonesta Drive to Ocean Drive) running along the north side of Oceana. Those same trucks will exit the beach using the Public Beach Access Point (E. Heather Drive) running along the south side of Oceana. Please note that there will be moderate noise resulting from the project, including back-up alarms from the trucks. Additionally, sand will be staged in a large mound at the south side public beach access point and beach capable trucks will shuttle sand south to the section being re-nourished. Work will progress from the southernmost portion of the project area and move northward.

The project must be completed no later than April 30th with the turtle nesting season starting on May 1st.
