As explained in Friday’s email, we are pleased to be able to provide you with face masks intended to help you comply with Village Emergency Order 20-6, as well as decrease your risk of exposure to Coronavirus when you venture outside of your apartment, especially to ‘essential businesses’ such as grocery stores or pharmacies. If you haven’t picked up the two masks for your unit on Friday or Saturday, they can be picked up from Marcelo in Lobby 2 today from 4:00-7:00, or email him at marcelo@tkbonline.com.

Please note that for the masks to be and remain effective, it is important that they be worn correctly, including

• fully covering your nose and mouth
• fit snugly, and only the strings should be touched, not the mask

Also, while the CDC and others have published guidance on sterilizing protective masks, these tend to be oriented to masks worn in highly infectious medical settings, and the only agreement seems to be that there are not conclusive standards. In fact, all methods of disinfecting non-cloth masks are controversial, including the suggestion that they can be disinfected if held in the steam over a pot of boiling water for 10 minutes. However, we want you to be aware of two treatments that are to be specifically avoided

• Masks should not be treated with 70% isopropyl alcohol, as it will degrade the fibers in the mask that are essential to protect the masks protection from virus
• Masks should not be placed in a microwave oven, as the metal bars that are critical to the masks ability to seal around your nose will cause sparking in the microwave

We hope that these masks will be one component amongst your tools and actions to protect you and your family from exposure to the Coronavirus.
