Dear Fellow Owners,

This afternoon as I walked out of the Lower Garage, I was approached by a TKB employee who is usually bubbling with enthusiasm, but not today. She explained that while assisting a new resident, she was accosted by another resident who berated her for not wearing a mask (an odd accusation as the CDC recommends that only symptomatic individuals wear masks) and accused her of bringing and spreading virus to the Towers. This to an employee who is paying for her three children to attend daycare, while school is closed, so that she can work at the Towers taking care of us.

I think it’s fair to say that many of us are stressed by the unprecedented situation in which we find ourselves. Scared by what we read, anxious that there isn’t clearer guidance, and struggling to reconcile an uncertain future. Tara Parker-Pope writes in today’s New York Times that she has added something new to her routine for managing stress – a “hand-washing and gratitude exercise. Every time I wash my hands, I focus on my feelings of gratitude”. I thought about her idea, and realized how easy, relevant, and useful it could be for us to think about the dozens of TKB staff who are cleaning and sanitizing our door handles and elevators and performing a myriad of tasks to make our community safe . They are coming face-to-face with hundreds of people each day, putting themselves at risk. Each of these employees has a family that they’re worried about, yet they come to TKB to help take care of us.

I am also grateful to Joe Maura and his management team not just for their dedication to our community, but for creating the culture that has attracted and retained so many employees who are faithfully and bravely serving the residents of the Towers of Key Biscayne.

The next time you’re feeling frustrated, angry, or just want to complain, please bring it to Management or your Board. We’re the ones best positioned to respond to your concerns. If you have an opportunity, I hope you’ll say thank you to our staff for all they do to make TKB a safe and more comfortable place to live.
